Steve, you're absolutely right: starting a business is a huge undertaking and fraught with peril. But the desire to "go it alone" must not get in the way of knowing when good quality help and advice are needed. Setting up a company is an arduous process; a good business owner shouldn't be afraid to ask for help from an accountant or a lawyer. It may cost money, but it could be well worth it in the long run. Also, sometimes a "fresh" set of eyes is invaluable when it comes to business planning and modeling. I cannot tell you how many clients of mine are so stuck in the details of their draft business plan that they fail to spot a great opportunity (or a great error) because they couldn't evaluate from an outside perspective. Again, I encourage anyone who wants to really own his own life and career to try it...but success could be hastened by asking for help.
